Murder on the Mississippi by Erik S. Meyers

ivankafear

An enjoyable, but deadly cruise down the Mississippi that will keep you in suspense from start to finish! A relaxing trip down the river that turns into a nightmare for main character Sally Witherspoon is a delightful mystery for readers. There’s a lot going on aboard The River Queen.

Bar owner Sally begins her trip excited that the day has finally arrived when she can take some time to herself and try to put the recent murder of her partner behind her. A slow burn as the reader gets to know the characters through Sally’s eyes, the question of who will be the murder victim ultimately leads to a second-guessing of the killer’s identity. A locked-room mystery, in the Agatha Christie style, tension escalates with the knowledge that one of the small group of people trapped together is a killer.

With a passenger list of diverse characters, author Erik S. Meyers deals with some deep themes, drawing on discrimination and the importance of remembering history and the atrocities of the past. An entertaining, yet thought-provoking, boat tour starting at Mark Twain’s birthplace with several stops in the U.S., Murder on the Mississippi is a trip through history as well as the physical geography of the country.

Just as Sally finds little time to relax with a murderer on board, so the reader will keep the pages turning till all is revealed. Lots of twists make for an entertaining read. And like Sally, once it’s over, I’m ready for the next adventure. Looking forward to more in the Sally Witherspoon series!
