Fatal Stand by Michelle Godard-Richer

You know the feeling of getting to the end of a series you love? That’s what this final book evoked. It brought on an excitement to see a resolution, but also a sadness that it’s over.

In Fatal Stand, David, the serial killer who has pursued Jessica since she witnessed him kill her neighbour, returns to finish the job—get rid of her and her ex-FBI husband, Jon. The blissful scenes of home life with their nine-year-old son and newborn daughter are juxtaposed with being trapped within a fortified homestead and living in fear of David getting past their security measures. But Jessica and Jon don’t passively wait. Jon uses his connections and expertise from his time with the FBI to search for David. Jessica takes on the role of a strong woman ready to protect her family at any cost. With the help of their friends and FBI agents, they can surely bring down this serial killer. Except… Here's their dilemma. David changes not only his name, but he has also altered his appearance with cosmetic surgery. His new identity is a shock. And the perfect cover. Jessica and her family will never see him coming.

Told from multiple points of view, author Godard-Richer gives the reader insight into the minds of all the main characters, including the killer. The style of writing lends itself well to a suspense thriller, with fast-paced action scenes and just enough description for the reader to visualize the rural landscape of Montana. Surprises and twists pop up from start to finish as Jon discovers the horror of David’s childhood and history. Meanwhile, Jessica faces some surprising revelations about her husband’s past.

An excellent ending (with a revelation I didn’t see coming), brings closure to Jessica and her family. I would recommend reading the series in this order: Fatal Witness, Fatal Hunt, Fatal Stand. The books can be read as stand-alones, but once you’ve read one, you will want to read them all.
